Is it appropriate to send thank you notes for sympathy cards you have received?

Or just send thank-you cards for flowers, food, etc? Please advise. My father died and I received several letters and was not sure of proper etiquette.

If you see it in person, thanks to them. If you have your phone number, call her if they were very touched and give them a thank you card.
